About old qualifications

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) assesses your knowledge and skills and is offered to those who have been in the industry for a number of years.

RPL is a process of gathering several forms of evidence so a judgement can be made to assess your ability to meet the requirements of the current unit standards registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) is an essential component in the RPL process, as all individuals in the industry must have current skills and knowledge to meet the current unit standard requirements.

Assessment

The assessment is carried out at the unit standard level with the assessor carefully checking the evidence supplied against the elements in the unit standards.

It is up to you to provide sufficient evidence to satisfy the assessor that you currently hold the relevant skills and knowledge. In determining whether you have presented sufficient evidence, the assessor must be satisfied that the evidence of prior learning is:

Relevant

the items of evidence are relevant to the unit requirements

Valid

the evidence addresses all aspects of the unit requirement, particularly the performance requirement

Current

the evidence reflects your current competence

Authentic

the evidence can be independently verified

Evidence

A good basis for the assessment is a portfolio of evidence. It will need to address each of the requirements of the unit standards and their elements you want formal recognition for. It may be that the evidence meets the requirements of more than one unit standard; and if this is the case the portfolio will become an indexed body of evidence, cross referenced to the mandatory requirements of those unit standards.

The portfolio must contain:

  • answers to specific questions relating to a particular unit standard
  • examples of the individual’s work, drawn from the workplace.

If the evidence does not meet all the requirements you will be asked to supply further evidence which will result in a delay to completion of the process.

Judgement statement

You will be judged competent when you have supplied the appropriate evidence to meet the requirements of the unit standards you are seeking formal recognition for.

Results

The assessor will decide whether you are Competent or Not Yet Competent in your assessment.

If you are found Competent, REAL ITO will add your results to your NZQA Record of Learning.

Appeals process

REAL ITO has an assessment appeal process that is transparent and readily available to you.
