What qualifications do I need
to do to get a licence?

Salesperson

If you want a Salesperson’s licence you have to have one of the following qualifications:

  • National Certificate in Real Estate (Salesperson) (Level 4).

    This is a 47 credit national certificate. It consist of 11 unit standards that covers your legal obligations and compliance, marketing, appraisal, and the sale and purchase agreement, as well as the new Act and ‘The Professional Conduct and Client Care Rules’. This is available through REAL ITO as a traineeship through on job training or from a tertiary provider. click here for more information.

  • A qualification listed in Schedule 3 of the Real Estate Agents (Licensing) Regulations 2009, together with the completion of an assessment, if any, that is required by REAL ITO to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of real estate agency work. Click here for an application form.

Branch manager

If you want a Branch manager’s licence you have to have one of the following qualifications:

  • National Certificate in Real Estate (Branch manager) (Level 5) version 3 or a later version. Click here for more information.

  • Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Real Estate) conferred by Massey University on or after 1 January 1992.
  • Five papers towards the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Real Estate) at Massey University: Real Estate Studies 127.261, Real Estate Appraisal 127.263, Real Estate Management 127.361, Planning Studies and Property Structures 127.362, and Land Law for Real Estate Agents 155.216.

    This part qualification expires on 31 December 2010.

  • Three modules at a polytechnic: real estate law, accounting and administration, and real estate appraisal; plus four papers towards a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Real Estate) at Massey University: Real Estate Studies 127.261, Real Estate Management 127.361, Planning Studies and Property Structures 127.362, and Advanced Real Estate Management 127.363.

    This qualification expires on 31 December 2010.

  • A qualification listed in Schedule 3 of the Real Estate Agents (Licensing) Regulations 2009, together with the completion of an assessment, if any, that is required by REAL ITO to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of real estate agency work. Click here for an application form.

Agent

If you want an Agent’s licence you have to have one of the following qualifications:

  • National Diploma in Real Estate (Agent) (Level 5).

  • Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Real Estate) conferred by Massey University on or after 1 January 1992.
  • Six papers towards the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Real Estate) at Massey University: Real Estate Studies 127.261, Real Estate Appraisal 127.263, Real Estate Management 127.361, Planning Studies and Property Structures 127.362, Advanced Real Estate Management 127.363, and Land Law for Real Estate Agents 155.216.

    This qualification expires on 31 December 2010.
